Ecolology in Hinduism

Climate change is closely related to ecological imbalance of the earth. If one studies the Hindu scriptures, he/she can realize how much importance is given directly or indirectly on ecology or natural elements of our world in Hinduism.

Natural Elements and Vedic Texts

The Vedic texts and rituals praise the earth (bhu), the atmosphere (bhuvah), and the sky (sva) as well as the goddess associated with the earth (Prithivi) and the gods associated with water (Ap), with fire and heat (Agni) and the wind (Vayu). Later on, these concepts were known as the Samkhya devotion of five great elements (mahabhuta) – earth (prithivi), water (jal), fire (tejas), air (vayu) and space (akasa).

Natural Elements and Hindu Puranas

In the Puranas, different gods and goddesses are seen mounting on particular birds and animals. These birds and animals are treated as divine and worshipped along with the gods and goddesses by the Sanatan Hindu devotees. We know how Krishna used to herd cows with gop-boys or how the monkey Hanuman was a faithful servant of Rama.  Besides, many plants, creepers, flowers, leaves, fruits etc. are used to worship the gods and goddesses. Medicinal plants have been given importance in Hinduism since Vedic period. The episode of Hanuman and Vishalyakarani of the Ramayana is well known to us. Many mountains, water bodies and trees are personified as gods and goddesses in Hinduism. They are believed to have souls and should be honoured and cared for. Many Hindus lead their lives as vegetarians. So, all the important and sacred elements of nature have been tried to preserve by the people of this religion around the world over ages.

What to Do to Save Earth?

To save the earth from all types of natural disasters we have to care for all the natural elements of this planet. The views of Hinduism and the Hindu community regarding this matter can be followed by all other inhabitants of the world.
