Kamika Ekadashi- Story and Significance

Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha (waning phase of moon) of Shravan month (July-August) is known as Kamika Ekadashi. It occurs after Shayana Ekadashi and followed by Pavitropana Ekadashi. Let’s know about Kamika Ekadashi Story and Significance.

Once, Pandava King Yudhishthira requested Lord Sri Krishna to explain the importance of observing the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Sravana. Then Lord Krishna narrated the conversation between Lord Brahma and his son Devarshi Narada in this regard.

When Devarshi Narada inquired of Lord Brahma about the benefits of observing a vrat, Lord Brahma revealed that those who confess guilt for their misdeeds and seek forgiveness will be forgiven by Lord. Moreover, by observing vrats, one can get rid of the guilt of committing sins and it will help them to evolve as a better person.

When Lord Brahma explained the significance of Kamika Ekadashi to Devarshi Narada, he said that fasting on this day can achieve the same merit as bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges. He also revealed how a person can reap the benefits of Kashi Darshan (visiting Kashi) by observing vrat on Kamika Ekadashi. Therefore, by observing a vrat on this day, devotees can free themselves from all their sinful activities.

Lord Brahma also said that one can get the blessings of Lord Vishnu by offering holy tulsi. However, a Vrati (faster) must have a pure heart free from anger, lust, greed or pride. Therefore, by observing Ekadashivrata with utmost faith and sincere devotion, one can fulfill his/her wish.
