According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Krishna narrated the significance of Varuthini Ekadashi to Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas. The story goes as follows:

Once there was a king named Mandhata, who was a righteous ruler and had immense faith in Lord Vishnu. One day, a group of sages visited his kingdom and requested him to arrange a yajna for them. The king agreed and asked his priests to perform the yajna.

However, as the yajna was about to begin, a demon named Mura attacked the kingdom. The king, along with his army, fought fiercely against the demon, but they could not defeat him. The priests then advised the king to observe Varuthini Ekadashi and seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings to defeat the demon.

The king followed their advice and observed the fast with devotion. On the day of Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu appeared before the king and blessed him with divine weapons. The king, armed with these weapons, defeated the demon and saved his kingdom. From then on, Varuthini Ekadashi became a significant day of fasting and devotion.

Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi

Varuthini Ekadashi is considered one of the most auspicious days for devotees. It is believed that observing this fast can wash away sins and bestow blessings from Lord Vishnu.
