Chapter 7 of the Bhagavad Gita has 30 verses and is found in the middle part of the book. The Bhagavad Gita is a very important spiritual text that teaches us a lot about life, ourselves, and how to achieve enlightenment. This chapter, called “Jnana Vijnana Yoga” or “The Yoga of Knowledge and Wisdom,” is where Lord Krishna explains deeper aspects of spiritual knowledge. We’ll go through each verse to understand its meaning better.
Shri Bhagavaan uvaacha:
mayyasaktamanaaha paartha yogam yunjanmadaashrayaha |
asamshayam samagram maam yathaa jnyaasyasi tachchrunu ||
Meaning: Shri Bhagavaan (Lord Krishna) said: O Arjuna, hear how you may become attached to Me with your mind absorbed in Me, practicing the discipline of yoga and taking refuge in Me. You will then know Me completely, without any doubt.
jnyaanam teham savijnyaanamidam vakshyaamyasheshataha |
yajnyaatvaa neha bhooyonyajnyaatavyyamavashishyate ||
Meaning: I will impart to you this knowledge, along with its realization. Once you know it, nothing further remains to be known.
manushyaanaam sahastreshu kashchidyatati sidhhaye |
yatataamapi siddhaanaam kaschinmaam vetti tattvataha ||
Meaning: Out of many thousands among men, one may strive for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.
bhoomiraaponalo vayuhu kham mano buddhireva cha |
ahankaara iteeyam me bhinnaa prakritirashtadhaa ||
Meaning: Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and ego—these constitute my eightfold divided nature.
apareyamitastvanyaam prakritim viddhi me paraam |
jeevabhootam mahaabaaho yayedam dhaaryate jagat ||
Meaning: Besides this inferior nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is a superior energy of Mine, which are all living entities who are struggling with material nature and sustaining the universe.
etadyoneeni bhootaani sarvaaneetyupadhaaraya |
aham kritsnasya jagataha prabhavaha pralayastathaa ||
Meaning: Know that all beings have their source in Me, O Arjuna. I am the origin of the entire creation, and into Me it again dissolves.
mataha parataram naanyatkinchidasti dhananjaya |
mayi sarvamidam protam sootre maniganaa iva ||
Meaning: O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), there is nothing higher than Me. All this is strung on Me, like pearls on a thread.
rasohamapsu kaunteya prabhaasmi shashisooryayoho |
pranavaha sarvavedeshu shabdaha khe paurusham nrishu ||
Meaning: I am the taste in water, O son of Kunti, and the radiance of the sun and the moon. I am the sacred syllable Om in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.
punyo gandhaha prithvyaam cha tejashchaasmi vibhaavasau |
jeevanam sarvabhooteshu tapashchaasmi tapasvishu ||
Meaning: I am the fragrance in the earth, the radiance in the sun. I am the life in all beings, and the austerity in ascetics.
beejam maam sarvabhootaanaam viddhi paartha sanaatanam |
buddhirbuddhimataamasmi tejastejasvinaamaham ||
Meaning: O Arjuna, know Me to be the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the brilliance of the brilliant.
balam baalvataam chaaham kaamaraagaavivarjitam |
dharmaaviruddho bhooteshu kaamosmi bharatarshabha ||
Meaning: I am the strength of the strong, devoid of desire and attachment. I am also desire which is not opposed to righteousness, O Arjuna, and I am the same in all beings.
ye chaiva saatvikaa bhaavaa rajasaastaamasaashcha ye |
matta evati taanviddhi na tvaham teshu te mayi ||
Meaning: Know that all states of being—sattva, rajas, and tamas—are produced by Me alone, but I am not in them; they are in Me.
tribhirgunamayairbhaavairebhihi sarvamidam jagat |
mohitam naabhijaanaati maamebhyaha paramavyayam ||
Meaning: Deluded by the three gunas – Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas – all this world does not know Me who am beyond them and immutable.
daivee hyeshaa gunamayee mama maayaa duratyayaa |
maameva ye prapadyante maayaametaam taranti te ||
Meaning: This divine Maya of Mine, consisting of the three gunas, is difficult to overcome. Those who take refuge in Me alone cross over this Maya.
na maam dushkritino moodhaahaa prapadyante naraadhamaahaa |
maayayaapahyatajnyaanaa aasuram bhaavamaashritaahaa ||
Meaning: Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons, do not surrender unto Me.
chaturvidhaa bhajante maam janaaha sukritinorjuna |
aarto jignyaasurarthaarthee jnyaanee cha bharatarshabha ||
Meaning: O Arjuna, four kinds of virtuous people worship Me: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise. Of these, the wise one, who is constantly united with Me through devotion, excels; because, I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and the wise are dear to Me.
teshaam jnyaanee nityayukta ekabhaktirvishishyate |
priyo hi jnyaaninotyarthamaham sa cha mama priyaha ||
Meaning: Among them, the wise one who is always absorbed in devotion, having single-pointed dedication, is exceptional. For, I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and the wise are dear to Me.
udaaraaha sarva evaite jnyaanee tvaatmaiva me matam |
aasthitaha sa hi yuktaatmaa maamevaanuttamaam gatim ||
Meaning: Indeed, all these are noble; but the wise one, I consider to be My very self. For, being steadfast, such a devoted soul has attained the highest state of union with Me.
bahoonaam janmanaamante jnyaanavaanmaam prapadyate |
vaasudevaha sarvamiti sa mahaatmaa sudurlabhaha ||
Meaning: After many births, the one who is endowed with wisdom surrenders unto Me, realizing that Vasudeva (Krishna) is all. Such a great soul is very rare to find.
kamaistaistairhritajnyaanaahaa prapadyantenyadevataahaa |
tam tam niyamamaasthaaya prakrityaa niyataahaa svayaa ||
Meaning: Those whose knowledge has been carried away by various desires, surrender to other gods, following various practices, according to their own natures.
yo yo yaam yaam tanum bhaktaha shraddhayaarchitumicchati |
tasya tasyaachalaam shraddhaam taameva vidadhaamyaham ||
Meaning: Whichever form a devotee with faith wishes to worship with devotion, I steady the faith of that particular devotee in that form.
sa tayaa shraddhayaa yuktastasyaaraadhanameehate |
labhate cha tataha kaamaanmayaiva vihitaanhi taan ||
Meaning: Endowed with that faith, the devotee engages in the worship of that form and from it gains the objects they desire, which are actually granted by Me alone.
antavattu phalam teshaam tadbhavatyalpamedhasaam |
devaandevayajo yaanti madbhaktaa yaanti maamapi ||
Meaning: But the rewards gained by those of small intelligence are temporary, for the worshippers of the gods go to the gods, and My devotees come to Me.
avyaktam vyaktimaapannam manyante maamabuddhayaha |
param bhaavamajaananto mamaavyayamanuttamam ||
Meaning: Unwise people think of Me, the unmanifested, as having assumed a form, because they do not know My supreme nature, which is changeless and transcendental.
naaham prakaashaha sarvasya yogamaayaasamaavritaha |
moodhoyam naabhijaanaati loko maamajamavyayam ||
Meaning: I am not manifested to everyone; being veiled by the divine power (Yogamaya), only a few know me as unborn and immutable.
vedaaham samateetaani vartamaanaani chaarjuna |
bhavishyaani cha bhootaani maam tu veda na kashchana ||
Meaning: I know all beings that have existed in the past, that are present in the present, and that will come into existence in the future, but no one knows Me.
ichchaadveshasamutthena dvandvamohena bhaarata |
sarvabhootani sammoham sarge yaanti parantapa ||
Meaning: O Bharata (Arjuna), O Parantapa (subduer of enemies), all beings are deluded by the dualities arising from desire and hatred, O scorcher of foes, at the time of creation.
yesham tvantagatam paapam janaanaam punyakarmanaam |
te dvandvamohanirmuktaa bhajante maam dridhavrataahaa ||
Meaning: Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life, whose sinful actions are completely eradicated and who are freed from the duality of delusion, engage themselves in My service with determination.
jaraamaranamokshaaya maamashritya yatanti ye |
te brahma tadviduhu kritsnamadhyaatmam karma chaakhilam ||
Meaning: Those who strive for liberation by taking refuge in Me (Krishna), they understand in full knowledge both the Brahman (the ultimate reality) and the entire field of activities (Adhyatma karma).
saadhibhootaadhidaivam maam saadhiyagnyam cha ye viduhu |
prayanaakaalepi cha maam te viduryuktachetasaha ||
Meaning: All beings are in Me, the divine essence within them; yet, those who know Me as the worshipable deity, with unwavering minds, even at the time of departure, they know Me truly.
