Shiv Chalisa: A Devotional Hymn Dedicated to Lord Shiva

The Shiv Chalisa is a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, a major deity in Hinduism. It contains forty verses and is often recited by devotees to honor Lord Shiva and seek his blessings.

Lord Shiva

Reciting the Shiv Chalisa helps to overcome difficulties and remove obstacles in life. Devotees believe it can ease their troubles and bring Lord Shiva’s grace.

It’s best to recite the Shiv Chalisa early in the morning after a bath. Many people choose to recite it on Mondays, during Maha Shivaratri, Pradosh Vrat, Trayodashi Vrat, and throughout the sacred month of Shrawan. The Shiv Chalisa is available here with an English translation for easier understanding.

Translation of Shiv Chalisa

॥ Doha ॥

“Salutations to god Ganesha, the son of Girija (Parvati), who is the source of all auspiciousness and virtue. O Lord, Ayodhyadas (a devotee or poet), grant us your protection and blessings.”

॥ Chaupai ॥

“Victory to Girija’s Lord, the supporter of the destitute,
Who always protects the saints.”

“Adorned with the moon and with serpentine ear-rings,
He has the golden glow and wears the snake as a sacred ornament.”

“His body is fair, his head is bathed in the Ganges,
He wears a necklace of skulls and a sacred thread.”

“The clothes he wears are simple and he appears with a lion’s skin,
His form is such that even the serpent becomes enchanted.”

“The mother of maina holds him in affection,
His left side shows a unique grace.”

“Holding a trident, he exhibits a majestic form,
He always destroys his enemies.”

Nandi and Ganesha are in his presence, like the lotus in the ocean,
So is his splendor.”

“Kartik, Shyam, and Ganraau—
None can describe his form fully.”

“When the gods call out to him,
He removes all sorrows.”

“He endured a great struggle,
The gods all offered their salutations.”

“He sent shadanana away immediately,
And greatly defeated the enemies.”

“You are the slayer of the demon Jalandhar,
And your glory is known throughout the world.”

“When Tripurasura started a war,
You saved all by your grace.”

“You fulfilled the promise made to Bhagirath,
And saved the ancients.”

“There is no one like you in generosity,
The devotees constantly praise you.”

“The Vedas sing your eternal glory,
The infinite and unchanging truth.”

“During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan),
You endured the flame and became a refuge for the gods and demons.”

“With your compassion, you gave aid,
And the name Nilakantha was established.”

“When Rama worshipped you,
You helped him defeat Lanka and give Vibhishan the kingdom.”

“You remained in the lotus of a thousand petals,
And tested him before granting liberation.”

“O Lord, you protect the lotus of the heart,
And the lotus-eyed one always admires you.”

“Seeing the hardships of devotion, Lord Shankar,
You became pleased and granted desired boons.”

“Victory, victory, victory to the eternal and indestructible one,
Who grants grace and resides in all hearts.”

“The wicked continually trouble me,
I remain restless and cannot find peace.”

“O Lord, save me, for I call out to you,
Help me overcome this crisis.”

“With your trident, strike down my enemies,
Help me overcome this difficulty.”

“Neither my father, mother, nor brother come to my aid,
In this crisis, no one seeks me except you.”

“You are the only one who can help,
O Lord Shiva, please relieve my hardship.”

“You constantly support the rich and the poor alike,
Whoever seeks your aid will find their desires fulfilled.”

“How should one praise you?
Forgive, O Lord, any mistakes we have made.”

“Shankar, you Are the remover of all difficulties,
You are the bestower of welfare and the destroyer of obstacles.”

“Yogis, ascetics, and sages meditate on you,
While sharad, sage Narada, and the nine disciples seek You.”

“Salutations, salutations, victory to Shiva,
To whom even the gods and Brahma cannot compare.”

“Whoever recites this with devotion,
Will surely receive the support of Shambhu.”

“Whoever is indebted and desires a child,
Will certainly receive Shiva’s blessing.”

“On Trayodashi, the scholar performs,
The ritual with devotion.”

“Observing the Trayodashi fast,
No troubles remain.”

“Offer incense, light, and food to the deity,
And recite the path in front of Shankar.**

“All the sins of births will be erased,
And the final abode will be Shiva’s abode.”

“Thus, O Ayodhyadas, you have spoken,
we know that all our suffering will be relieved.”

॥ Doha ॥

“Let me do the morning prayers,
And recite the chalisa.
O Lord of the universe,
Fulfill my wishes.”

“In the month of Margasirsh, during the Chhath day, in the season of Hemant (winter),
On the twenty-fourth day of the lunar calendar,
This hymn (Astuti) known as the Shiva Chalisa,
Brings complete welfare and blessings.”
