Krishnamacharya’s usage of “vinyasa” encompassed two meanings: as a sequence of steps to approach a posture and as a stage in executing an asana. Conversely, Pattabhi Jois, a disciple of Krishnamacharya, emphasized “vinyasa” as the linking movements between asanas in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, creating a flowing, meditative practice.

Evolution and Modern Interpretations

Sharath Jois, grandson of Pattabhi Jois, further refined vinyasa yoga by coordinating breath with movement transitions between asanas. His approach involves specific sequences—vinyasas—such as Chaturanga Dandasana, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, and Adho Mukha Svanasana, creating a cohesive system of breathing and movement.
